Haiti Updates and Preparing Your Family for Potential Disasters

Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti left a lot of people in the U.S. wondering how to help the victims in that devastated country and what they would do if they were in a similar disaster themselves. Stay up-to-date about the quake and relief efforts and learn how you can prepare your family for disasters with information from the Federal Citizen Information Center:

  • Find the latest updates from the U.S. government about the current conditions in Haiti and ways you can help the relief efforts. If you’re concerned about a U.S. citizen in Haiti, you can call the State Department’s hotline: 1 (888) 407-4747.
  • Be prepared. Earthquakes can strike nearly anywhere. Whether you’re at home or on vacation, FEMA offers tips to help you stay safe.
  • Learn. Check out USA.gov’s Disasters and Emergencies page to make sure you’re prepared for any major event, from earthquakes and hurricanes to fires and floods.
  • Have a plan. Setting up an emergency plan ahead of time will help your family stay calm during a disaster. Identify a meeting place and decide how you’ll stay in touch if you’re separated.

No matter when or where a natural disaster strikes, you can rely on the information from the Federal Citizen Information Center and USA.gov to help keep you and your family safe and informed.
